I went to a social media presentation about a year ago and the speaker said something that hit home, "social media is cheap if you don't value your time".

The idea that if our site addresses the needs/desires/dreams (we are in travel) of a consumer.... they will find us.... gives me heart as we are really trying our best to create unique content that will add value to a traveller researching their holiday in Africa. We do battle to keep all the pots boiling as far as inbound links, SEO and social media etc is concerned.

Thanks for this article (and others), you really give some practical, usable advise.

Great article, Nick. We are currently giving some serious TLC to our new website when it comes to blogging, inbound marketing, and SEO. Our website is soon-to-launch and in the industry of pet supplies. Your tips are keeping us on the right track. Hopefully a year from now you will hear great news about us :)

As always, another great article Nick, thanks. With something as time consuming as building a blog with quality content, thinking of it as free is a tad silly.

Good summary. Always a good reminder that this is a long term deal. I think your point of keeping at it to keep your top spot could have been a whole separate paragraph b/c of the necessity to keep up with the changes going on with the engines. It's not a "get there and you're done" situation. Always enjoy your articles. Thanks.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for this post as well! We'll be able to use this with clients in order to help them better understand the nuance differences. My favorite line here is "It takes a long time to build up real relationships with your target audience, understand how they use social networks and find the right time/way to connect with them." Thanks again!
