5 Ways to Become an Industry Authority
Everyone wants to be considered an authority figure in their industry. Why else would you start a business? Becoming an industry figure that has power and influence takes time and hard work but it is something that can be done you just have to take the right steps.
Here are 5 ways that you can build yourself and your business as an authority in your industry – of course, every industry and local/national factors make this slightly different, but this is a list of some of the key areas to consider:
Launch A Blog
Launch a blog and write in it every single day regarding a variety of topics in your industry. If you are in a heavily congested space online you might have to write a bit more, it might require you writing twice per/day rather than once.

Go Heavy On Social Media
Websites and brands that really know how to leverage the social media space can distance themselves from the newbies in the industry and quickly put an advanced stamp across their forehead. Go heavy on Twitter and try funneling traffic down to your Facebook page to build your community.
Build Your Newsletter
Build up your newsletter as much as you can. Some of the biggest players in any industry usually have a very large newsletter list that they can count on for new leads coming into the website. Find creative ways to build your newsletter up using free giveaways and promotions so you have someone you can keep in touch with.
Fun Promotions
If you really want to stand out of the crowd and become an authority in your industry put out some promotions that others have not even attempted. If you want to really get on people’s radar screens give them a reason to turn their head and inquire about what you are doing.
Relationships
Make a goal for yourself to create a relationship with someone in your industry that has a better grip on the community than you do.
Being a authority in any industry requires hitting the pavement running hard and thinking outside of the box to achieve what needs to be achieved in your community. Getting creative and vocal is a must in any industry so don’t forget to have the mindset of a big brand. Think big at all times.

If I might add another tip.
Become a speaker. Apply to various trade shows and events to speak on your area of expertise. Speaking from stage gives you instant authority and credibility.
Make sure to get plenty of photos and video of you speaking.
Nick,
I would also add conferences. Being a speaker at industry conferences could be valuable not only from the prestige point of view, but you can distribute presentations through services like SlideShare and amplify your social media influence.
Hi Lyena,
This is very true! Speaking at industry conferences is a great way to build your authority, but like any type of medium you should look at your ROI as well. For instance, I recently spoke at an industry event and it cost my company thousands of dollars and we have yet to get any new business from that. So it may pay off in the future (in new business) but sometimes it is intangible as well (speaking at a conference might help influence a new client, etc).
Thanks again & take care!
Nick
Nick,
An intangible payout from conference talks would also be in recording and posting a video on line (or in several parts), plus the Powerpoint as a PDF download (can also be posted several places online – scribd.com and slideshare.com, for instance).
All those additional materials contribute to building your authority and also building your list, as well as adding more newsletter material.
The point is to keep track of all you publish and re-publish it in many different formats for different types of viewers.
Oh, yes – don’t forget that the high-quality version of that same video can be burned to DVD for sale…
Hi Robert,
Great points! Thanks for bringing them up and for reading!
Take Care,
Nick
