Nick,

An intangible payout from conference talks would also be in recording and posting a video on line (or in several parts), plus the Powerpoint as a PDF download (can also be posted several places online - scribd.com and slideshare.com, for instance).

All those additional materials contribute to building your authority and also building your list, as well as adding more newsletter material.

The point is to keep track of all you publish and re-publish it in many different formats for different types of viewers.

Oh, yes - don't forget that the high-quality version of that same video can be burned to DVD for sale...

Hi Lyena,

This is very true! Speaking at industry conferences is a great way to build your authority, but like any type of medium you should look at your ROI as well. For instance, I recently spoke at an industry event and it cost my company thousands of dollars and we have yet to get any new business from that. So it may pay off in the future (in new business) but sometimes it is intangible as well (speaking at a conference might help influence a new client, etc).

Thanks again & take care!

Nick,
I would also add conferences. Being a speaker at industry conferences could be valuable not only from the prestige point of view, but you can distribute presentations through services like SlideShare and amplify your social media influence.

If I might add another tip.

Become a speaker. Apply to various trade shows and events to speak on your area of expertise. Speaking from stage gives you instant authority and credibility.

Make sure to get plenty of photos and video of you speaking.
