Yes I think it is definitely important. Giving appropriate keywords to your site definitely would help in search engines. So this is important but at the same time it should also be keep in mind that your site does not have excessive keywords, then it would prone to excessive keyword stuffing which is also not appreciated by Google. So, we must keep it in mind while dealing with the keywords.
