The most common mistake you see is reciprocal linking with other websites. Most people still think that is what link building is, but it is worthless in terms of building page rank and authority.

Also, to add to point #1, Google doesn’t take too kindly to websites that only optimise for one type of keyword/keyphrase, as it looks over-optimised and unnatural. You should also make sure that you have a fair proportion of your links with the website address as the anchor text, as this is what a real natural link is likely to look like when people link to you, and so looks more genuine to Google, which is great for page rank but useless for search.

Lastly, you should also build up a portfolio of different types of link sources, such as blogs, forum posts, press releases, articles, directories, webpages, news feeds, etc.

I agree with you! Quality links are always going to take precedence over quantity links. Additionally, anther common mistake is that of “reciprocal” linking. In my opinion it is not an effective strategy. Just my two cents!!

I agree with you that the quality must be over quantity. The quality link building takes more time but still worth doing.
