There is a difference between paid links to only increase rankings vs a one time paid submission to a good quality directory that could potentially generate visitors to a website.

I’m confused about directory links, particularly paid. Aren’t directories just “link buying” schemes designed only to manipulate Google PageRank? Therefore they are not according to Google’s guidelines? And any “free” directory listings – aren’t those just link-building schemes designed only to manipulate Google PageRank? And again, against Google’s published guidelines?

I like the article. I find it harder and harder to link build as time goes on. It seems like nowadays articles are losing link juice, along with the free directories.

I was wondering if donating to a local business that you have a relationship with in exchange for a link would be considered unethical?

You seem to know a lot about link building and seo and I have simply run out of link building techniques. This article clears it up for me, thank you

this is all nice nick. thank you for the article but the most salient issue is locating good directories that will actually boost your popularity. is the pagerank of the directory enough? I don’t think so. a listing on a pr5 directory may not give you link juice, while another on a pr4 will. it looks so random that it’s easy to go on link building spree like someone casting a net, with the belief that you’re gonna catch good fish, as well as bad fish. how about those shady sites that list you without your consent and you have no way of asking them to remove your listing. even if you did, how are you gonna guarantee that they will oblige?
