Are you a Marketing SEO or a Technical SEO?
There are many different ways to achieve good quality search engine optimization results online. When SEO was first introduced about ten years ago the approach was a very technical one. It came down to things looking like a science project rather than true marketing. Over the years there has been a slow transition. The search engines are not supposed to be manipulated by a mathematical approach in order to get things to rank well. As the transition occurs it will be important to figure out what type of SEO you are. Do you like to market a business and build it through a variety of online marketing approaches or do you like to take a much more technical approach with your links?

Whichever approach you chose it is important to realize that the search engines are constantly evolving and moving away from a technical approach. As they grow their focus on offering the cleanest and most relevant information this will only become stronger. The search engines are already showing signs of rewarding those who market a business with the means of growing a business through a variety of quality online marketing and branding efforts rather than just putting a number value on how many links one can achieve. A technical approach is what the search engines are really trying to move away from. If you are an online marketer the search engines want to see you build rankings from building your brand online not through finding loop holes. Things like online PR announcing newsworthy topics and positioning yourself as an industry expert through proactive article marketing. Things a real business would do to market themselves if the internet never existed. Search engines want to see a heavy focus on social media marketing as well. Social media marketing takes time with a quality approach so no fly by night who wants to generate a specific number of links is going to take their time to actually communicate with their audience online through a series of conversations. The technical SEO approach has a shelf life that will soon expire. Those ridiculous promises of thousand of directories or “article blasters” will soon be a thing of the past.

Definitely, I am a marketing SEO person. Without traffic there are no sales, without sales there is no business.
Hi DIY SEO Coach,
Thanks for reading and your comment. It is always amazing to me how many SEO folks truly don’t understand that it comes down to visitors and sales…
You need a solid technical platform to deliver your marketing from. I would suggest that there is no such thing as a ‘Marketing SEO’ or ‘Technical SEO’; There are marketers, and there are SEOs. Much like designers and coders or builders and architects, the two are inexorably linked.
Hi Simon,
Thanks for reading and your comment.
I actually disagree with you as I have seen SEO people that are too much into the technical part of SEO. In my experience, SEO is 80% marketing and 20% technical, you need both elements to do it well. So you have have a point as well.
I agree, SEO practitioners need to be aware of and interact with the wider universe. Marketing is more than SEO. SEO is a part of marketing. Of course this depends on what your experience of SEO is. In my experience, SEO interacts with PR, web design, copywriting, social media, usability, PPC, online media, I.T. and sales, with the ultimate goal of delivering the most profitable natural search campaigns in line with the goals of all stakeholders. So I stand by my point.
Hi Simon,
You are correct, SEO and Marketing does both do interact with every aspect, PR, web design, copywriting, social media, usability, etc. This proves my point and I would consider you a marketing SEO person (like myself). A technical SEO person might merely look at the webmaster guidelines, but not take the time (or have the skillset) to truly look at and understand all of the components that really have to work well together to build a solid, long term SEO program.
Again, thanks for your insight and input and for being a reader of my blog!
Yes, SEO has evolved and become less about the technology/algorithms and more about content and overall marketing strategy.
Hi John,
Thanks for reading and the comment…SEO is indeed about marketing and much much less about all technical…
Nice post! It revels a importance to understand the work of marketing SEO persons. I’m a marketing SEO professional. The business are made with traffic and the SEO technical is only to build a way to client find the internet business.
The SEO technics is one aspect for marketing strategy.
Hi Reinaldo,
Thanks for reading and your comment. You are correct, SEO is indeed one very important aspect of internet marketing.
Yeah i agree with this post which is very true there are lot of companies who are promising links etc… But as we can see specially Google is considering lot of elements when it comes to ranking a site. Bounce Rate, Site load speed, Crawl Rate etc… Some SEO companies doesn’t even know about these. They only know some on-page and LINK BUILDING
Hi internet seo,
Thanks for the comment, all of the technical aspects of SEO are just as important as the marketing parts, for sure!
Yes, I agree with Simone that seo is part of marketing, we do seo for the purpose of marketing and sales, they’re interactive and can’t be divided from each other.
