A Typical Morning Social Routine
A person that is truly involved in search engine optimization does a variety of online marketing items through the day that keeps him or her connected with the online world almost non-stop. For all of you out there who think the SEO should be “free,” this will give you a rundown of what a typical SEO person might do on a daily basis to market themselves in the community. It is not a magic pill or a quick winded technical tweak it is straight up marketing and building a business online.
Anyway, here is my typical social morning routine, mind you I have 1 year old son at home and I am up early anyway!
This is based on the types of tasks that I perform each morning:
6 AM – Wake up fire up computer start letting your email pull in all your daily tasks and contacts to reach back to. Pour a heaping cup of coffee and get ready to dive in to your morning SEO & social media.
6:15 AM – Go through all your morning internet marketing newsletters and scan across all the blogs that you enjoy reading for something fun and exciting going on in your industry. This also gives person ideas on different post topics they could write about. This applies to all industries not just search marketing.
6:30 AM – Open your blog or whatever platform you use and log in and click on “new post”. Try gathering your thoughts and ideas from all the clever blog post ideas you have swimming around in your cranium and pick one and write the title down immediately. Stare at the title for a few moments and think about all the intelligent lists and tables you can insert into your blog post to make it sticky and news worthy all while tying a nice message to get across to your readers. Write about 500-700 words and publish that bad boy. If you want to write less that is fine too but always try making it at least 350 words long. Hit view site and make sure all formatting looks right. This will prepare you for the rest of the items you need to perform to get things moving.

6:45 AM – Now the real fun starts. This is where most businesses apply the brakes and start doing something else but not us SEO minded people. We realize that to get visitors you need to put your blog posts out there for people to see in order to deliver highly targeted and relevant website traffic to your blog. If you have a new blog you really have to jump out in front of them and let them know you exist.
Some social sites that I frequent at this point are:
- LinkedIn: First it starts with posting my new blog post into my targeted LinkedIn groups. These are highly targeted submissions going out to a variety of industry groups filled with anxious readers will generate great results.
- Sphinn: Since we are in the internet marketing industry we have a social bookmarking site dedicated towards our industry news. I submit a few articles per week there that delivers a nice steady stream of traffic. You should take the time to see if there are any news sources out there you could submit your information to.
- Facebook: I update my blog post on the wall of my profile and answer any questions that someone might have regarding any of our services. Engaging in any online conversation with your audience is always very important and builds trust over time. Trust is very important if you are looking to generate any online business.
- Twitter: Don’t forget the little blue bird by any means. Make sure you always submit all your blog posts into Twitter. Also while I am in there I will always look for 10 or 20 new targeted people to follow. Doing this everyday gets a person following back and over time that is what builds your Twitter community. Don’t neglect this step or you’re online social media marketing might not be reaching its full potential.
By this point I have spent a good 2-3 hours of work getting the daily preliminary items out of the way to help build some new traffic to my website for that day and beyond this step should be done by most businesses who are trying to be found online and grow their business on the internet. I usually frequent back through the social profiles throughout the day to see if anybody has started any conversations with me also. It is important to answer those in a timely manner. SEO is not something you try do once a month. It is constant daily efforts that will bring new traffic to you on a monthly basis and beyond. SEO is now a multi-pronged approach and it is important to realize that it really takes this type of morning dance to get the really good traffic coming to your website every day.
Often times the afternoon has a very similar approach if I decide to write another blog post on our blog throughout the day which I often do. Your online audience is much different from your offline audience. They need to be hit every day with new fresh content reminding them that you still exist. Repetition is key with an online community and it requires daily work and patience. Over time you will see more and more new website traffic find its way over to your website but it does require daily social work. The important take away here besides everything I have mentioned is DO NOT abuse anything that I mentioned…too much of anything is not good for you!

Thanks Nick, this is real helpful.

Very well explained. It is easy to call yourself an SEO or SEM expert. Going through all the hoops, is more than one simple hurdle.
Again Good Points
P.S. How about explaining to your readers about stop words. Too many “writers” grab a PLR article and spin it with software. Then, they proclaim to be both a SEO and Article professional.
Thanks Donald for reading and sharing your thoughts…great topic for a future post/article
How do you manage to write a block between 6:30 and 6:45am? Only 15 minutes. I tend to take 2 or 3 hours for just a 300 word blog! e.g. http://blog.acarda.com/
Hi Pete,
Thanks for reading and point this out. I should mention that I personally write my blog posts in advance and then simply proof and schedule it each morning…
Thanks again for reading!
