Natural Link Building Wins

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

The best type of link building happens when the search engines don’t think it is happening forcefully. This meaning search engines like to see natural growth when it comes to marketing a business online. When search engines see a nice steady natural growth there is a certain amount of trust put into that domain which gives it the ability to climb a bit quicker.

Why does link building need to be natural?

Search engines hate manipulation of search results. They do however understand that companies need to perform proactive marketing efforts in order to achieve those natural growth abilities. There is a thin line between too much sometimes and not enough which is why you’re marketing should look as natural as possible. A website that builds naturally online is a website that is proactively branding and marketing themselves which is what the search engines really want to see. They have all come out and said they prefer websites which take a quality growth rather than a forced growth.

I wrote 100 articles and they didn’t do anything for me?

This honestly doesn’t surprise me at all. This is not natural at all. The search engines algorithms are always changing and picking up on approaches like this and they are getting smarter by the day. You have to approach your marketing with a different mindset that will allow you to really market your business online the right way using natural solutions.

Now I know all this is much easier said than done and generating natural growth takes times and patience but if you really want to reap the rewards of having an online website that is powerful and well respected you are going to want to really take a marketing and branding approach to your link building rather than a technical one.

Throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the wall and hoping something sticks might have worked five years ago but in today’s marketplace it is not going to fly anymore. Link building should be laser guided and natural to ensure you are taking the most strategic path possible.

Very well said Nick, even i believe in natural link building bt don’t no why people go on submitting more & more articles, bookmarking, directory, etc. It will definitely nt going to help them anymore. Thanks for the post.

    Hi Ray,
Thanks for reading and your comment! It is truly amazing how some people still think this horrible approach works…natural link building is the way to go!

  • Joseph Shivell says:

Making marketing look as natural as possible applies not only to the number of links, but where they come from. I am still seeing “experts” tell people that .edu and .gov domains carry more weight than others, so they should get more links from these domains. Not only is this not natural, it’s not true! Also, when you choose your keywords, these also have to look natural. Would your website “naturally” get links only for all high traffic keywords? Of course not.
Being “natural” applies to your entire marketing strategy.

  • Tony says:

Would this be considered natural (Blog posting). I know the search engines frown on buying or reciprocal links. I consider natural not using bots to create comments on blog. Going page to page manually and putting your work in is what I’ve noticed is the best way.

  • Nick Stamoulis says:

    Hi Joseph,
So true about .edu and .gov links! If there is a clear reason to get a relevant link from these sources, then so be it, otherwise this is clearly not a natural!

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!

    Take Care,
    Nick

  • Joseph Shivell says:

    @Tony:

This is definitely natural, we use them ourselves. You can also use articles on social bookmarking or networking sites.

  • Nick Stamoulis says:

    Thanks Joseph…

I agree using social booking is a great way to drive traffic and build a brand…

    Thanks again!

I think most people don’t do natural link building for two reasons. #1 – They don’t know how to do it or worse, why they should be doing it and #2 – directory and article submissions have become very ecomonical and “easy”. Although they are still a part of an overall strategy, Nick said it best “Throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the wall and hoping something sticks might have worked five years ago…”. Patience, hardwork and some good Keyword driven strategy works best.

    Hi Nick,
This is a great place to find the article that I was searching for “Natural link building” I am doing directory and article submission for our company web site and it gets ranking on top, 2nd rank in Google with the keyword “video conferencing India”. I used the keyword as anchor text.

    Hi Nick,
Thanks for your great articles on SEO. I work with SEO clients involved in eCommerce across the country and try to communicate the same exact things to them that you do – that SEO takes a commitment of time and effort, and that there is no “silver bullet” to be had. Those who buy into the process reap the incremental rewards. Doing many of these “little details” correctly and consistently pays big dividends over time – especially when the search engines change their algorithms abruptly.

Thanks Nick, awesome info as usually. I don’t think that social bookmarking actual drives that much traffic, but that might just be me.

You`re right on with this post. Natural link building is definitely the way to go.It`s nice when you leave a post and the owner of the blog deems your answer as excellent and he puts your link on many of his/her pages.
Building your brand and promoting your brand shows you have confidence as well as something worth exploring for searchers who are always looking for more and better content and offering.
Promotion is where i am presently -planning my FB page for my website

    Thanks Nick
I think this gives me a bit of a nudge to increase my pace.

    Have a Great Day !

    Hi Nick,

I totally agree! I conduct site analysis all the time and found that article links seldom pull in any weight. Yes I am guilty of putting up hundreds of articles and find that its not showing much. The audits show that even simple postings on high PR forums give much more bang for the investment buck any day. So why waste time getting lost in the billions of trashy articles and blogs out there pretending to be some sort of ‘expert’ when most of the content are recycled or purchased from spinners?

    Nick:

You hit it right on the money. Search engines sure have become a lot smarter when people use things like article marketing, press releases, rss feeds, link submission services, social bookmarking, etc and all those other “guru” techniques that just seem to get you into more trouble wih the search engines. As you well know “slow and steady” wins the race.

I am now a little worried, although i do try to natural link building, i did pay a company for 250 links in blogs/forms/link wheels and websites. all the content was pretty relavent but i hope it doesnt damage my already good listings.

  • ZoovyMitch says:

    Hi Nick:

Very straight forward and to the point…we know that content is king but links are most important also. Most often this is missed by the startup and sometimes the mature business that has not made it a priority. Most businesses do not realize the importance of back links for ranking. Good job.

All said and done, your technique does not help this person…

    1) A person with a relatively new website, say around 1-3 years old, with good content, good site.

    2) Competitors with websites over 8-10 years old with PR’s of 6-8 and millions of backlinks and indexed pages, almost dominating google.

    3) So now, are you saying that our person in question should wait for 5-10 years for his website to gain authority????

    Hello???

He has to feed his children!! Your “natural” link building is not giving him food! Or maybe you people are just ignorant that all people are not as rich as people in your country to “wait” for natural results!

This is the main problem with people in the US/Uk and other “developed” countries. Sitting in your air conditioned office, eating meat, driving a ford is not something that people in other country can enjoy…

  • Nick Stamoulis says:

    Hi Amod,

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!

You bring up some great points and that is why I ALWAYS recommend that EVERY business markets and promotes their business in many ways online and offline in addition to a strong SEO effort, for situations as you described…every business is different and should diversify their online marketing approach: SEO, social medial, PPC, Email Marketing, etc…

    Thanks again & take care,
    Nick

I read you make loads of sense by explaining how the search engine works….i know back in 1995-98 it was pretty much easy to have websites ranked as found. Now it’s much tougher to get ranked which i find a challenge…lolzzz…but thanks to your valuable information this will help gain knowledge and insight into what changes become available… great work and keep it coming.

Natural Link Building Wins hands down….

    Hi Nick,

You are absolutely right that natural link building wins, Well I want to say something that content based link building is the better way to derive the traffic to the website. Article marketing is the best way to improve the website traffic because it is totally content based marketing. People should understand the importance of article marketing and they should have a patience because article marketing does not work overnight, it will take time to get some benefits. So article marketing is the best to get better traffic to the website.
