Is There An Anti-SEO Approach That Works?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Listen to some experts and search engine optimization is the Force. Go against it at your own risk. But is there ever a time when you can make a website work - that is, make it profitable - without SEO? Can you shun the SEO business and still make money? Generally, I'd never encourage anyone to dismiss with on site optimization principles when building a new site, but there are times when SEO just isn't going to help you reach your goals because of it building and long term nature. Of course, one could take the argument that good content is far more important than SEO anyway, but that's a different discussion altogether. The real issue to building a successful website without optimization is far greater than the mere "content is king" argument. Let's examine this theory: You may want to build a Web 2.0 property that is social in nature and relies on AJAX and other dynamic code. That's fine. But how will you promote it? Unless you have a plan for promoting your Web 2.0 property outside of the search engines you may want to optimize your site. But you can be successful without the optimization if you are willing CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Can You Rank For Key Terms Without Inbound Links?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

More and more I read online where some search engine optimization expert is telling people they can't rank without inbound links. This is about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Of course you can rank without links. How do you explain a blog post that goes to Page 1 on Google within a couple of hours before dropping off the radar? Do you think it suddenly bagged a bunch of links within two hours then fell because the competition managed to gain more links? No. That rarely happens. On-page content is the most important aspect of SEO. It always has been and always will be. Because the search engines are constantly updating and changing their ranking algorithms, the degree to which on-page content and inbound CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

How To Get Media Links That Benefit You

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

You know that .gov and .edu links are some of the most valuable links you can get. But what about media links? From a search engine optimization point of view, media links hold no special value, but from a traffic and authority point of view they hold a lot of value. The reason is quite simple. If you get a link from an authoritative media website then it is seen by the majority of readers as a strong vote of confidence in your authority. But it isn't easy getting media links. Perhaps the best way to ensure you get that coveted media link is to send a press release. But you should make sure you send it to the right person at the right media company. Is SEO A Zero Sum Game?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

A zero sum game is one in which a gain for one person means an equal loss to another. That is, if you win the other person loses, and vice-versa One example of a zero sum game is in professional football. Two teams match up and at the end of the game there emerges a clear winner. The team that wins gets a 1 in the left column and the team that loses gets a 1 in the right column. The fact that one team won means the other team lost. That's a zero sum game. Search engine optimization or SEO isn't played like that. It's not zero sum. There are no clear winners and losers since there are a large number of variables that affect CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Local SEO Just Got Easier

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

An interesting article in WebProNews illustrates just how easy local SEO is now. Is this the way Google is going to start handling all queries now? I performed my own search at Google for the following search terms: Chiropractor Dentist Auto mechanic Internet marketing In all except the last case, Google returned local results. I did not have to search for local, Google returned it automatically. I think this is a great trend and it illustrates a very important concept - that Google knows, based on your IP address, where you are geographically. That's very important for search engine optimization experts to know. If you are building a local business in certain niches then it is important to submit your website to Google Maps. Is Twitter Promotion Another Version Of Spam?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

The word 'spam' gets bandied about a lot. But what is it? If we got spam in our e-mail inbox we'd all know what it is. It's unsolicited, unwanted commercial come-ons from people we don't know, right? There is even a tremendous amount of search engine optimization spam... Those are distinctions worth analyzing: Unsolicited - Hey, I didn't ask you for it! Unwanted - I did not desire to receive this message. Commercial - You're trying to sell me something. Come-on - It's a cheap ploy. People I don't know - In other words, if my cousin Bob sends me an e-mail out of the blue one day and asks me to buy his lawn mower because he just bought a new one and doesn't need the three-year-old used one CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

How Rel=”me” Should Work

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Twitter recently changed its title tag on user bio pages to include the rel="me" attribute on links. That is pushing some people's bios up to No. 1 on Google and has some marketers concerned. But there is a fix for that. The rel="me" attribute looks like this: a href="http://www.searchengineoptimizationjournal.com" rel="me" The purpose is to identify the relationship between web properties or identities that are owned by the same individual. Many social sites and directories use the rel="me" attribute automatically when users link from their bios on those sites to their own blogs and websites. That's fine, but social users typically do not link back to their social bios in the same manner. But they should. According Microformats.org, the rel="me" attribute is there for the purpose CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Do You Need A Sidebar On Your Static Website?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

In the ever-evolving world of web design, one question that seldom pops up is, "Do I really need that sidebar for my website?" It is generally assumed that a sidebar is necessary. But is it? There are lots of reasons why you can include a sidebar in your static website design, but understand that there are very few musts in design. The main things to consider with any web design are: Functionality User experience Optimization Navigation ease of use In a word, you want your website to be easy to use for the visitor, offer up a positive experience that keeps them coming back, be easily found in the search engines, and be laid out simply so that visitors can navigate easily between the pages as they are searching for what CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Google’s New Search Toy

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Google announced a few days ago that it's got new technology it's implementing into search results that offers related search terms. I think this is kind of cool and I wonder how long it will be before Google actually implements it into the search results completely. In other words, instead of offering searchers related search queries at the bottom of the SERPs, when will Google actually offer pages from those related search queries into the actual search results that appear. For instance, if I search for "love", the first two search results are for The Love Calculator and the Wikipedia entry on love. At the bottom of the page is a list of related search queries, just in case I didn't really know what CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

Where Should Online Marketers Go In A Recession?

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Follow the news and you'll just in circles. In 1998, Google was a startup, but by 2001 it was hot. Facebook kicked off in 2004 but it went hot by 2006. MySpace was hot a few years ago (2005). Now, it's Craigslist. The No. 2 search engine is YouTube. The top 3 most profitable companies online are Google, Amazon, and Yahoo!. All of these companies are great places to search in their own right. So where should you go today to market your products and services? Obviously, you can't ignore Google. But what about YouTube? I suppose you can do without video marketing, but why should you? Then there's Yahoo! and Flickr. A good number of searchers still hang out on Yahoo! They CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

How To Optimize Your Content For All Web Browsers

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Browser compatibility is a very important issue for webmasters. With so many browsers on the market today it is imperative that you ensure your content is optimized for the various browsers. Internet Explorer alone has several versions that are popular and your site visitors could be viewing pages from IE5, IE6, IE7, or IE8. Beyond Internet Explorer, you could have site visitors viewing your web pages with any of the following browsers: Firefox Safari Chrome Flock Opera These are the major browsers. Why SEO Is A Dirty Word

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Talk to some people and you'll find that SEO is a dirty word. I agree, it sure it. But why? I think I have the answer. There is this mindset, especially in Internet culture, that says anything that propels a person to success is dirty and gritty. Success is just supposed to happen. So if you build a website and hit it big because you've dominated your niche, it should be an accident. You should not have planned it that way. Another reason I think SEO or search engine optimization is a dirty word is because people don't really understand it. SEO means you've tried to rank pages of your website for specific keyword phrases highly in the search engines.. But Google isn't based on people trying to CLICK HERE TO READ MORE...

How To Go From Page 3 To Page 1 In Days

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

If you work in an area where good white hat search engine optimization means hitting page 3 with your on-page efforts but you just can't seem to get your pages ranked any higher then it is possibly to push those pages further up in the listings. You need to undertake an ongoing relevant link building campaign. Link building is not as difficult as some people make it out to be. It isn't enough to seek out a large quantity of links. Quality links are just as important and developing a "trust factor" for your company. But what is meant by "quality link"? The quality question in link building is not so easy to answer.
