It looks like google is already indexing images though.  The certainly do it through their image search.  All those images come from scrapped website content, and now there is an option in webmaster tools to index images.

It reads: Google now offers enhanced search for images contained in your site, including advanced labeling techniques for images hosted by Google

It is under tools, then enhanced image search.
