I totally agree. I think of link-building as a natural evolution of PR - it's about establishing relationships with people/sites that have a natural connection to your topic area and therefore a natural inclination to link to your site, if you give them a good reason. Usually that reason is valuable content they want to offer to their readers.

Link building that has only ranking as its objective often attracts only low-value links. If your goal is to provide valuable content to a qualified audience, you are much more likely to bring qualified traffic as well as improved ranking to your site.

Hi Nick,

I agree with you completely on this, and I will tell you one more important thing that I have found when I tested my websites: the links that don't drive traffic to your website have less value and impact on rankings then links that drive traffic.

This means that if marketers are using some automation to get backlinks from spamy blogs or some .edu sites, which never generate real human visitor, this has less impact on website rankings.

And of course, if you get backlinks from those places directly to your site, the reputation may suffer, and you might lose rankings.

Since most people are focusing only on automatic link building, that is the reason why they do not see any real traffic and conversions.

Thank you!
