I'm with Boise SEO on this one. I always ask potential clients, "why do you deserve to rank?" If they can't answer that, then they have bigger problems than SEO can solve. If a company doesn't have a solid business plan, then an SEO is going to struggle from day 1 and we set ourselves up for failure if we enter into a contract with a company who doesn't start out with something of quality to offer.

My favorite quote: "I can't polish a turd. If you bring me a turd, I'm not gonna SEO it."

Very true, I agree that slow business shouldn't be blamed on just SEO. The website itself does play a big part in the slowing down of a business. Websites should be deigned in a user friendly way for a start, and in a way that makes the product or service compelling.

An amazing product could be let down by bad online marketing, and an average product could be overrated and sell out the stores thanks to a good website. So it definitely matters about the website itself.

Great post, I enjoyed this post, as all of your posts are enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.

One of the first questions I ask any perspective client, Are your services that you offer comparable to your competition? better service, better price, what is your niche. I let them know I can get eyes on their website or Places page, but once the customer calls you or emails you then it's up to you.

Great article for us SEO's. Wish a couple of my clients would see this article.

Good post. I think sometimes people expect miracles out of SEO, when really it is meant to generate more leads for clients, not resurrect a poorly constructed business model/website.

If your business does not have a way to capture leads, offers a product/service not worth buying, and has a poor website, you may not be ready to hire an SEO company yet because you will not get the full benefit of your money spent on SEO.
