I would also say that it is important that your SEO firm (or any vendor) plays nice with other vendors or your internal people. For example, sometimes the SEO firm has to work together with the web vendor to make changes to the site, etc. It is important that they can interact in a professional manner to give you the results you’re paying for.

Great article and so true. We go out of our way to communicate with clients. They are paying us money to do a job. We send regular updates on work we are doing and all customers receive a monthly report.
And as Jacob says communicating with website developers etc is integral to doing the job properly. I wont pretend that this is always easy but we try hard to work with everyone.
The object is, after all, to provide a great service to customers and to see their sites ranking well.
A few “to do’s”
Do – take the SEO’s advice seriously
Do – not then complain about lack of results if you don’t follow their advice…
Do – not take ages to implement site changes – why should the SEO give your work priority if you don’ t implement the results likewise?
