Every day I receive search engine optimization emails offering to “get my sites to number one on Google in seven days or my money back”. Yeah right! Okay, it can be done. But do you really want it done?
Sounds a little strange? I don’t want number one – I want traffic and I want traffic that is going to convert to leads and sales. You probably do too and there lay the problem. True SEO is not geared towards ranking your site at number one.
True SEO tries to have your pages rank as highly as possible for the best targeted keywords that will deliver real traffic to your pages.
Perhaps I should frame that? Those who claim to have your site ranked at number one do this by finding the most obscure keywords that have almost no competition and optimizing your pages for them. Yes – you get to number one. Guess what – you’re going to be lonely. The reason there is no competition is because no-one uses that keyword in their searches. End result – number one on Google – but no traffic and sales.
It is no good complaining; they have done their job and got you to number one with a keyword relevant (often only vaguely) to your site. If there is no traffic, well they didn’t actually promise traffic, just number one on Google.
Before taking up an offer that makes dubious claims, make sure you read the fine print. Ask if they can get you to number one using highly relevant keywords that will see an increase in traffic that can be converted in sales or leads. If they don’t run, take a second look at them. I would still treat them with caution.
SEO consultants that are honest will never make wild claims. We can never promise how high your pages may rank nor for how long. We can do everything possible to increase the visitors to your website and that should be your primary concern. Ask us to increase your sales or leads – and we will start by increasing your traffic and optimizing your pages to encourage the sales. Number one does not mean more sales, or more traffic for that matter.
