“Word of mouth” increases heavily if you are noticed by the the inner circle. It is not just the single tweet, it is also the additional re-tweets and links in articles and whatnot which over time will make a real impact from the center and out.

This opinion coming from one who has unfortunately not spent the time at conferences, so this is based merely on personal observation

However, obviously, “the inner circle” depends a lot on your location and your specific niche. I am sure many small country SEO agencies are doing great work (and highly popular at their home turf) without ever being noticed by any from the “inner circle”.

Yeah, I agree to that Nick. It goes back to our Junior High days. Maybe because we all want to be “in”. But like you said, “Focus on doing great work for your clients, building your business and developing your own voice as an authority figure. The respect of the industry will be earned in time”. Very well said.
