At my company we implement SEO as a process which permeates all levels of content creation, and publishing. Everyone who touches our content or it's delivery methods, IT staff, designers, editors, marketing researchers, content managers and PR staff are all trained in SEO methods and best practices. So we do not consider Social Media as part of SEO, rathter we view SEO as a component of developing and publishing content for all channels and platforms, which are in turn components of an overall E-Marketing strategy.

Hi William,
You bring up some great questions! I personally think that it is the duty for an SEO professional to understand how to use and integrate social media as part of their on going SEO efforts. Thanks again for the comment!

SEO + SMO are the perfect blend for any digital marketing strategy nowadays considering than many tactics can be integrated in the mix. I still find it very broad when it comes to defining what the components of a social media campaign are. I would like to see some more of that since people tend to say that participating of Twitter, Facebook and other social networks are the campaign itself. What are other ways to bring social media in to the mix?

On the other hand, what's the role of the SEO expert, keeping in mind that there are more factors to consider for a successful program? Is the SEO obliged to know everything about both (SEO & Social Media)?

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Aaron,
Thanks for stopping by and your additional comments and thoughts. You certainly nailed it right on the head when you said the overall digital marketing strategy is about the entire customer journey not just about getting visitors...thanks again!

This is one of the more intelligent posts I have seen recently about SEO and Social Media. Backlinks from social media sites and social media conversations look set to take on even greater importance as many of the paid for press look to place their content behind paywalls (and therefore vanish from Google's link count. Nobody is yet sure of exactly how that particular scenario is going to play itself out but NewsCorp seems intent on having a showdown with the search engines and is encouraging other publication owners to do the same.

It should be noted though that simply working on your visibility and driving traffic isn't a strategy it is a tactic and you overall digital marketing strategy should look at the whole customer journey from first contact through to first sale and then on to regular purchase and referral and place the customer at the heart of this using all the tools and tactics at your disposal.
