Do You Target Moms, Dads, Or Just Everyone?
The brick and mortar and retail world has known for decades that the best people to target are moms. They generally hold the purse strings and are also the one who generally do the shopping. Of course, it’s not true in every aspect of marketing, but you would be surprised at how much marketing is designed to influence moms.
It seems the online world has not been as fast to pick up on this aspect of ecommerce. Can you target moms when it comes to your website, your content and the way you market your business and part of your search engine optimization efforts. I believe you can and in a big way if you go about it the right way. The long term benefits include a size able increase in the number of inbound links.
How does that work? Moms talk and, more importantly, are taking to blogging in bigger and bigger numbers. Word of mouth is one of the better forms of advertising and these mommy blogs are not afraid to talk about what they like, what they don’t like, and to link back to sites that they recommend.
The key is to present you site in a way that is friendly to those moms that are venturing online. The traditional shopping areas include clothing, toys, jewelry and fragrances and in increasing numbers, entertainment. You can target your advertising and marketing through social media sites and parenting forums.
Of course, the second component is to provide good products together with good service. Online shopping moms are more likely to leave product reviews and recommendations on your site, and having done so, also on their own blog if they one. The end result – more traffic from recommendations and more links from blog reviews.

That’s pretty true now that I think about it. I wonder how exactly one markets to moms on the internet specifically. I think it hasn’t been much of a trend until recently because the people that have children are generally older. Moms 10 years ago would probably not pick up on the internet. But now with new moms coming into the mix that have had internet exposure for a good chunk of their lives…it might be a big change up on the horizon. Interesting article!
Hi Nathan – Thanks for reading and leaving your thoughts…I agree that it will be a big change for online retail marketers targeting the mom demographic now and in the future!
I think there is a little wisdom in what you say. It is true that offline businesses have been targeting mothers for many years. As you put it, they hold the purse strings and normally make spending decisions.
I question whether the online community is mature enough to target groups like mothers, fathers or children. What do you think? Is this an opportunity that can exploited before it becomes mainstream, or is too late? Should we be narrowing our demographics now and only targeting those groups? I can see whole new group of keyword options if we do.
Thank you for the brain fodder.
