I think it is very difficult to price SEO services (and it’s value). Many clients require estimates of increased revenue up-front. This requires that you know something about the company’s revenue model, the overall goals and strategies, competition, etc. Otherwise it will only be guesswork.

Getting paid for a pre-analysis is sometimes very difficult.

Nick, I have a question for you.
We are interviewing web designers for a complete redesign of your four year old web site and they all want to do the SEO also. Most of them say its ether all the work or nothing. Help me understand.
How can every ecommerce company be good at every thing?
How do you split the different scopes of work, web designer vs SEO people.

I agree with you Nick. If say the copy in the SEO company’s web site is full of misspellings and other grammatical errors that’s not a good sign.

As for the URL and meta tags you are presuming the client knows enough about HTML which is not the case more often.

Some excellent points Nick!

I agree with Joseph. I will give referral contact informaiton during the last stage of my sales cycle. Never up front. It ends up being to cumbersome for our existing clients. I also generally ask for blanket permission first and then call them before a specific prospect is given contact information so there are no surprises. I find that works best for us.

Also, make sure that what ever clients you put in your portfolio page on your website knows they are their (give them a link) and tell them they may get a phone call here and there about the services you are providing them. Most are pretty cool about being profiled, some do not want their competition to know.

I agree with you! My company has lost clients from this too…the worst is when a potential client calls your clients for a reference and then they never do business with you or give you the decency to say he we decided to hire another company…

You give some very good advice on choosing an SEO firm, but I did want to comment about references. Some of our clients have gotten annoyed because too many of our prospects have taken it upon themselves to call to check us out – we even lost a client because of it. For that reason, we do not give out references to anyone who asks. However, we will ask our clients if they are willing to accept a phone call from an interested prospect, if there is a sincere interest in our programs.
