Good article Nick, and well put Pete. It amazes me how people still fall for this lowest common denominator SEO service and advertising. News Flash: SEO takes skill and TIME. Neither of which are free, much less $99 a month. However, I don't know how many times a black hat (LAZY) firm has allowed me to ride in on the white horse. Its just the issue of having to undo all of the crap they do (or dont do) that is the PITA.

Great post Nick, basing from a little experience and from what I understand, you get it easy, you lose it easier, such with SEO, with lights on, a dark campaign wouldn't last long.

I was thinking of sharing our local small town tourism site with some large linked in travel professional groups to offer some sort of cross linking campaign with others in the world travel industry. Could this be considered a black hat strategy?

Timely topic and dead right on. I might add that, even for companies that have had bad or marginal experiences with shady or black hat SEO providers, the investment with a white hat house may look like the same animal but, in the absence of all the red flags of a typically shady campaign, is going to accomplish more for you in the long term than anything you could do in the short term. Just ask JC Penney and Overstock.com.
